MEMOIRS OF A BOARDING KENNEL OWNER
by Terri

"BUSTER"

When we first took over the kennels the accommodation was adequate, if a little antiquated. The dogs’ cages had steel framed doors with mesh panels welded on.
One of our first customers was a lovely, lively young German Shepherd called “Buster;” the owners lived a couple of miles away. They left him with us the day before they went on holiday. After taking him for a walk through the woods we fed him, shut him in his kennel and closed the door for the night.
At about six o’clock the following morning the telephone rang:
“ Hello, this is Buster’s owner; is he all right?”
“ Oh yes, he’s quite happy here”
“ Well actually he’s back here with us!”
When we rushed to his kennel we found he had torn off the mesh panel; the main door (it had a lever type fastener) was wide open.
We had discovered how he got his name!

"A PROPER CHARLIE"

Running a boarding kennels was very much a family business for us. As a rule a responsible adult was always on the premises, but one Saturday afternoon my husband and I were called out on an emergency and had to leave our seven year old son "in charge" for a short period. By sod’s law a customer, an elderly lady, returned early from her holiday and came to collect her small King Charles Cavalier spaniel. At the house she was greeted by Jason and asked:
"Do you think you could bring Charlie up from the kennels for me"
"Of course! I’ll go at once" replied Jason and set off.
He returned, panting, with a huge Irish wolfhound (named Charlie, of course) towering above him on the end of its lead.

"Oh dear!" said the lady, "I think you have got the wrong Charlie!"
The matter was quickly resolved, but Jason’s pride was damaged. He was very cross with us when we returned and it was some time before normal relations were resumed!
