WALKING IN THE WAKE

The Diner

The driver’s eyes seemed to flash every few seconds as he checked on Victoria. He remained silent. The call to prayer filled the air as the speeding car slowed down to a halt.
Victoria remained in her seat; there was no point in moving as the prayer took its normal path.
She took the time to compose herself then, to her astonishment, a tanned blond fellow dressed in a stone coloured suit stepped forward as if from no-
where.
" Well," she gasped. "James."
" At your service," he replied." Shane asked me to look after you."
" Oh he did - did he?" she declared. Well, at least she hadn't been left to dine alone.
They passed the doorman who had depended on the automatic doors to service the diners during prayer.
Victoria glanced around the Diner. "Where is everyone?" she muttered.
" I believe there is something important going on about the airport," replied James who had already reached for a menu as he was walking by the bar. He had also glanced at the waiter instructing him to follow with a nod of the head, trying desperately to get a drink for Victoria.
" Vodka?" he checked with her. As if by magic a large glass was placed before her; ice clinked followed by a rush of vodka then sparkling tonic. Victoria mellowed and
reached for her glass with a very well kept hand and perfectly manicured nails. "You?"
She looked up with those appealing eyes. James held her gaze; was she tempting him to be disloyal to his friend? (one never knew with this cat- like female).
“Me? Well, I will have a beer." The waiter quickly reached for a cold beer and duly served it whilst another silent figure offered a further menu to Victoria. Then silence as they both sipped their drinks. Background music was provided by a piano, bass and drums. Windows overlooking a very large swimming pool were wide open, nets blew inwards with a breeze that everyone seemed thankful for, although one was used to the air conditioning purring away. “Purring away like Victoria,” thought James. How long would this sultry silence continue? he pondered.
" This beer is just right," he ventured. "Mmmmm," she murmured.
Suddenly James stood up. "Great Scot," he declared, “is this how it's going to be, Mmmmmm?”
Victoria pushed back her seat. Standing up she almost threw her drink over her reluctant escort.
" How dare you?" Pushing her seat back further with a clatter she began making her way to the door. Waiters ran around making sure the way was clear. Her driver was already on his feet; he had expected something like this. She waved her hand with the instruction: "My car...NOW!"
As she arrived at the door a figure loomed up before her. It was Shane. "What?" he exclaimed "is going on?"
Victoria brought her hand down with a sharp slap across his face. "Take me home!" she yelled.
Shane followed her out of the Diner. He purposely sat next to the driver and remained silent as she arranged herself on the back seat. The driver kept his eyes on the road,
making sure that they arrived at their home as quickly as possible.
The electric gates opened..................................
Shane opened his door and without a backward glance went straight into the house demanding that the driver wait.
Victoria followed, swinging her handbag, taking strides behind him. Her eyes were huge as she stared straight at Shane.
" You," he said in a furious tone, "will be sorry for this.” He swung around, flinging the door shut behind him he walked back to the car.
" Take me to the airport!" As if prepared for the change of direction Shane's car sped off in a cloud of sand, leaving Victoria stood rooted to the spot.

Oh dear!
