THE
LIFEBOAT
WHATEVER WOULD WE ALL DO WITHOUT IT? |
How can we possibly set sail without the knowledge that if we are in trouble we can send a distress signal? Who gets that signal? Well, the lifeboat of course. When I lived in Fowey in Cornwall we were really excited when the maroon went up: Bang! Then we waited for another bang. The sound of two meant that soon we would hear the sound of feet running down the empty road in between the houses along the narrow streets of Fowey. Sure enough this was heard together with occasional shouts, and then if you were to look out of your window on a very stormy night you would see the lifeboat manned by local men setting off to rescue whoever was in trouble.
